Scientists looking to take their research beyond the laboratory have an opportunity to work alongside some of the nation’s leading space and science researchers through the NASA Postdoctoral Program.

NASA is accepting applications from early-career and experienced scientists for competitive fellowships at locations across the United States. The next application deadline is November 1, 2026, giving qualified researchers an opportunity to pursue projects connected to NASA’s work in space exploration, Earth science, aeronautics and other areas of scientific research.

The program is administered for NASA by ORAU and brings postdoctoral researchers into NASA centers, NASA Headquarters and NASA-affiliated research institutes. Fellows work directly with NASA scientists on ongoing research projects while gaining experience that can help prepare them for careers in government, academia and the broader scientific community.

“The NPP provides scientific and technological fellowships offered at NASA and one-of-a-kind research experiences that prepare future leaders for NASA, the academic community, and beyond,” said Taifa Simpson, ORAU’s NPP Operations Manager.

Simpson said the program also provides fellows with an opportunity to work in a collaborative research environment while developing their professional careers.

Fellowships Can Last Up to Three Years

The NASA Postdoctoral Program offers fellowships ranging from one to three years, depending on the research opportunity and appointment.

Research areas include space science, Earth science, aeronautics, space operations, exploration systems and astrobiology. Fellows have the opportunity to contribute to NASA research while working with scientists involved in some of the agency’s ongoing missions and scientific programs.

The program is open to both U.S. and international scientists, making it an opportunity for researchers from a wide range of backgrounds to pursue NASA-related research.

Applicants who are currently completing a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree may apply, although they must complete all doctoral requirements before beginning their fellowship.

Scientists who earned their doctorate more than five years ago may also qualify to apply as senior fellows. NASA and ORAU provide additional eligibility requirements for applicants based on their academic background and professional experience.

Fellowship Includes Stipend and Other Benefits

Financial support is another component of the program. Current stipends for NASA postdoctoral fellows begin at $70,000 per year, with additional supplements available for researchers working in higher-cost areas or certain academic specialties.

Senior postdoctoral fellows can receive stipends based on factors including the location of the appointment, years of experience beyond the doctorate and professional accomplishments.

The program also provides several additional benefits. Depending on eligibility, fellows can receive health insurance supplements, relocation reimbursement and as much as $10,000 annually for travel and professional development.

That support can allow researchers to attend conferences, pursue professional development opportunities and build connections within the scientific community while working on NASA-related research.
