COLUMBUS, Ga. - Muscogee County School District students have progress reports scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 10, a student and teacher holiday Wednesday, Nov. 11, and a five-day Thanksgiving break Nov. 23-27, according to the district's official 2026-2027 school calendar. The calendar also schedules winter break from Dec. 21, 2026, through Jan. 1, 2027, a 12-calendar-day period, followed by a teacher planning day Jan. 4 and the beginning of the second semester Jan. 5. Students are scheduled to receive another round of report cards Jan. 6, making November, December and early January an important stretch of the district's academic calendar.
The district's published calendar identifies the major dates affecting classroom schedules, progress reports, grading periods and student holidays. It also lists school district activities in November and December, including a board work session and academic and behavior screening. The following questions and answers explain the published dates, how many weekdays are affected and when the second semester begins.
1. When Are Progress Reports Scheduled in November?
The Muscogee County School District has scheduled progress reports for Tuesday, Nov. 10, according to its official 2026-2027 school year calendar. The date falls immediately before the Nov. 11 student and teacher holiday. It is also the next progress-report date identified in the district's published schedule for November.
The district's calendar shows that the school year began Aug. 3 and that an earlier nine-week grading period ended Oct. 6. Report cards were scheduled for Oct. 13, according to the same calendar. The Nov. 10 progress reports are therefore listed after the October grading and report card dates and before the end of the first semester in December.
The next progress-report date after the winter break is Feb. 5, according to the district's calendar. The schedule also identifies Jan. 6 as the next report card date. These entries separate the November progress reports from the report cards scheduled following the first semester.
2. Why Is There No School on Wednesday, Nov. 11?
Wednesday, Nov. 11, is designated as Veterans Day and a student and teacher holiday on the district's official calendar. The designation means the date is not scheduled as a regular instructional day for students or a regular workday for teachers. The holiday comes one day after the Nov. 10 progress-report date.
The district's calendar identifies Nov. 11 separately from its Thanksgiving break later in the month. It is the only individual student and teacher holiday shown between Nov. 2 and the beginning of the Nov. 23-27 break. The calendar does not identify additional school closures during that part of November.
The Nov. 11 holiday also affects the number of scheduled instructional weekdays remaining before winter break. It accounts for one of the six weekdays excluded from the Nov. 2 through Dec. 18 calculation. The other five excluded weekdays are during Thanksgiving break.
3. When Is the Five-Day Thanksgiving Break?
Muscogee County schools have Thanksgiving break scheduled for Monday, Nov. 23, through Friday, Nov. 27, according to the district's calendar. The break covers five consecutive weekdays. All five dates are identified within the district's published Thanksgiving break period.
The Nov. 23-27 break follows the Nov. 10 progress reports and the Nov. 11 student and teacher holiday. It is the last multi-day break identified in the district's calendar before the December winter break. The school district's official schedule distinguishes the November break from the winter break beginning Dec. 21.
The district's published dates provide the boundaries for the break without listing separate instructional activities within those five weekdays. The next major academic date identified after the Thanksgiving break is the end of the first-semester grading period on Dec. 18. Winter break begins after that grading period ends.
4. How Many School Weekdays Remain Before Winter Break?
There are 35 weekdays from Monday, Nov. 2, through Friday, Dec. 18, based on seven five-day weeks. Subtracting the Nov. 11 holiday and the five weekdays of Thanksgiving break leaves 29 weekdays with students scheduled. This is a Columbus Times calculation using the dates published in the Muscogee County School District calendar.
The calculation is based on the district's listed holidays and breaks during that period. The calendar shows no other closures within the Nov. 2 through Dec. 18 window. The total of 29 scheduled student weekdays assumes no additional closures or schedule changes beyond those identified.
| Calendar calculation | Weekdays |
|---|---|
| Nov. 2 through Dec. 18: 7 weeks x 5 weekdays | 35 |
| Nov. 11 student and teacher holiday | -1 |
| Nov. 23-27 Thanksgiving break | -5 |
| Scheduled student weekdays remaining | 29 |
The district separately lists academic and behavior screening activities for Dec. 1-4 on its online calendar. Those activities are not identified as additional school holidays in the published schedule. The 29-day calculation therefore does not subtract the screening dates from the scheduled student weekdays.
5. When Does the First Semester End?
The first-semester grading period ends Friday, Dec. 18, according to the Muscogee County School District's official calendar. Winter break begins Monday, Dec. 21, immediately following the weekend after the grading period ends. The district lists these as separate calendar entries.
The Dec. 18 date marks the end of the first-semester grading period. The district's calendar then schedules report cards for Jan. 6, after students begin the second semester. This places the report card date following the winter break rather than during December.
The district's calendar also identifies Oct. 6 as the end of an earlier nine-week grading period. Its report cards were scheduled for Oct. 13. The December and January dates follow the same published distinction between a grading-period ending date and a later report card date.
6. How Long Is Winter Break in December and January?
Winter break runs from Monday, Dec. 21, 2026, through Friday, Jan. 1, 2027, according to the district's 2026-2027 calendar. That period covers 12 calendar days, including 10 weekdays. The 12-day figure counts the full period from the first date of winter break through its final date.
The district schedules Monday, Jan. 4, as a teacher planning and staff development day. Its calendar identifies that category of day as a student holiday. The second semester begins Tuesday, Jan. 5, according to the published schedule.
Counting the 10 weekdays within winter break and the additional Jan. 4 student holiday produces 11 weekdays without scheduled student attendance. This is a Columbus Times calculation based on the district's published dates. The calculation distinguishes the 12 calendar days of winter break from the longer period students are scheduled to be away from classes.
| Winter calendar item | Date or count |
|---|---|
| Winter break begins | Monday, Dec. 21, 2026 |
| Winter break ends | Friday, Jan. 1, 2027 |
| Calendar days in winter break | 12 |
| Weekdays in winter break | 10 |
| Teacher planning and student holiday | Monday, Jan. 4 |
| Total weekdays without students, including Jan. 4 | 11 |
| Second semester begins | Tuesday, Jan. 5 |
7. When Do Students Return and Receive Report Cards?
The Muscogee County School District has scheduled the beginning of the second semester for Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2027. Monday, Jan. 4, is reserved for teacher planning and staff development and is identified as a student holiday. The published calendar therefore places the start of the second semester after the winter break and the teacher planning day.
Report cards are scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 6, one day after the second semester begins. According to the district calendar, the first-semester grading period ends Dec. 18. The Jan. 6 report card date follows that grading-period ending and the winter break.
The district also lists Jan. 18 as Martin Luther King Jr. Day in its 2026-2027 calendar. The next progress-report date is Feb. 5. Those dates appear in the calendar after the second semester begins.
8. What Other District Events Are Scheduled in November and December?
The district's online calendar lists a Teacher Leader Council meeting for Wednesday, Nov. 4, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Muscogee County Public Education Center Board Room. The calendar also identifies a board work session Monday, Nov. 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the same board room. These activities appear on the district's calendar alongside the academic dates.
The calendar includes National School Psychology Week on Nov. 9-10. It also schedules Winter Universal Academic & Behavior Screening from Dec. 1-4, with hours listed as 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at school sites. The screening entry does not identify those dates as student holidays.
The district's calendar provides both the annual school schedule and additional event information through its online listings. The annual calendar identifies the grading periods, report cards and holiday breaks, while the online calendar includes meetings and screening activities. Both official resources are available through muscogee.k12.ga.us/calendar.
