  • Chester's Ribs & BBQ, 400 Fourth St.: 100 on May 18, 2026. Its five scores since 2024 were 100, 100, 99, 100 and 100.
  • Chester's Barbeque, 2501 Airport Thruway: 100 on Aug. 21, 2026.
  • Marshall's Smokehouse, 547 Veterans Pkwy.: 96 on April 22, 2026. Its scores since 2024 were 100, 96, 90, 94 and 96.

What the numbers mean for diners

Columbus restaurants overall averaged 96.8 on health inspections since Jan. 1, 2025. Nine of the 12 ranked barbecue restaurants matched or beat that on their latest inspection.

Stars and inspection scores measure different things. An inspection is a snapshot of food safety on one visit. A Google rating reflects what customers think of the food and service, and it shifts as new reviews come in.

How we did this

The Columbus Times compared Google Maps ratings and review counts collected Oct. 10-17, 2026, with Georgia Department of Public Health food service inspection records for Muscogee County.

Restaurants were identified by state permit names containing BBQ, Bar-B-Q, Barbecue, Bar-B-Que, Barbeque or Smokehouse, so the list may miss barbecue places with other names. Restaurants were ranked by Google rating, with review count breaking ties.
