The best-rated Mexican restaurant in Columbus, Ga., isn't a big sit-down cantina with a margarita menu. It's Taco's N Thangz, a small taco stand on Forrest Road with a 4.8-star Google rating, and it tops our ranking of the city's 10 best Mexican restaurants.
The rest of the list runs from a Mexican brunch café in Midland to a pay-by-the-pound buffet on 17th Avenue and El Vaquero, whose Northlake Parkway location has more Google reviews than any other Mexican restaurant in town: 2,597.
How we ranked them: We started with every restaurant in our Restaurant Scores database, which covers every place the state inspects in Columbus and the surrounding area, and kept the ones whose main business is Mexican food and that have at least 100 Google reviews. We ranked them by Google star rating as of Oct. 21, 2026, and broke ties by the number of reviews, since a 4.4 from 2,500 people says more than a 4.4 from 150. Together, the 10 spots on the list have 8,858 Google reviews.
For each one, you'll also find the latest Georgia health inspection score, the hours and what diners say to order.
The national chains didn't come close. Columbus's two Chipotle locations rate 3.3 and 3.6 stars on Google. Its Taco Bell locations range from 2.8 to 3.6 stars, and Moe's Southwest Grill on Whittlesey Boulevard has 4.0. Every local spot on this list beats all of them.
10. Vallarta Mexican Restaurant: 4.4 stars (1,246 reviews)
2151 Fort Benning Road · (706) 682-8895 · Monday through Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Saturday, noon to 9:30 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 7 p.m.
Vallarta sits on Fort Benning Road, a few minutes from the post's main gate, and it gets a steady stream of soldiers and families. Google's summary of its reviews says diners single out the salsa, the tamales and the steak fajitas, along with fast service and big portions.
One reviewer called it "one of the few Mexican places in Columbus" that hasn't been westernized and said prices run about 20% below the north side of town. Another praised the birria ramen and what looked like house-made tortillas, "which is rare to find." The most common knock: a few diners found the food a little bland, so ask for the hot salsa.

9. La Nacional Mexican Buffet: 4.4 stars (1,406 reviews)
4403 17th Ave. · (706) 221-9911 · Open 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. (8 p.m. Sunday); closed Wednesday
La Nacional91 is the only buffet on the list, and it works a little differently from most: you can fill a plate from the cafeteria-style line and pay by the pound, or order from the menu. Google describes it as a no-frills spot with an all-you-can-eat option.
The dish diners rave about isn't on the buffet. "Today I tried the Mojarra Frita," one reviewer wrote of the whole fried fish. "This was the best piece of fish I have had in my life." Others come for the quesadillas and the fajita mix. Note the schedule: La Nacional closes on Wednesdays, unlike every other spot on this list.

8. Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant: 4.4 stars (1,934 reviews)
6517 Kitten Lake Drive, Suite 1, Midland · (706) 507-0555 · Monday and Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Guadalajara is the go-to Mexican restaurant for much of Midland and north Columbus, with nearly 2,000 Google reviews. Diners say it serves big portions of the classics, and Google's review summary points to the fajitas, the carnitas and the ceviche.
"Cheese dip was 10/10," one Father's Day diner wrote, calling it a "favorite restaurant in Columbus hands down." It has outdoor seating, but reviewers warn the parking lot is small and there's no indoor waiting area, so it gets cramped at the door on busy weekend nights.
Latest inspection: a perfect 100 on July 23, 2026.
7. El Vaquero Mexican Restaurant: 4.4 stars (2,597 reviews)
2976 Northlake Parkway · (706) 317-5900 · Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
No Mexican restaurant in Columbus has more Google reviews than El Vaquero's Northlake Parkway location. Google describes it as a comfortable spot for combination plates and drink specials, and its review summary says diners like the burritos, the stuffed chimichangas, the margaritas and the easy parking.
It's honest about what it is: Tex-Mex comfort food, not a regional Mexican kitchen. A reviewer from California called it "a typical Americanized version," heavy on sauces, while a business traveler who sat at the bar called it "an awesome destination restaurant" with the best bartender he'd seen in years. Come for the margaritas and the combo plates, and you'll leave happy.

6. Panadería y Taquería Tía Rosa: 4.5 stars (198 reviews)
1671 S. Lumpkin Road · (706) 358-6688 · Open daily, 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Tía Rosa is two places in one on South Lumpkin Road: a bakery with fresh bread and pan dulce, and a taquería with tacos, sopes and tortas. Google's summary also mentions pupusas, the stuffed corn cakes from El Salvador, which you won't find anywhere else on this list.
"The most authentic tacos ANYWHERE in the area," one reviewer wrote. Diners order the chorizo tacos and the tortas, and they leave with a bag of bread. It's also the only spot on the list open every day of the week from morning to night, 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. A few reviewers said the tacos run small for the price and that delivery orders have been hit or miss, so eat in if you can.

5. Me Encanta Modern Mexican Cuisine: 4.5 stars (476 reviews)
1231 Broadway, Suite 100 · (762) 524-7066 · Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Google's review summary says diners like the ceviche, the fajitas and the churro cart that rolls up to the table for dessert.
"The hit was the churro cart," one reviewer wrote, after a meal of fajitas, charro beans and a 25-ounce Texas margarita. Another diner who said they'd eaten Mexican food in Mexico and the Southwest called it "one of the best restaurants period." It's open until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, the latest weekend hours on the list, and reviewers mention brunch, too.

4. Mi México Restaurant Bar & Grill: 4.6 stars (515 reviews)
4475 Warm Springs Road, Suites 4-6 · (706) 221-1044 · Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Mi México is the highest-rated full-service Mexican restaurant in Columbus with more than 500 reviews. Google's review summary says diners like the birria, the street corn and the homemade tortillas, plus soft-serve margaritas and fair prices.
The house-made touches come up again and again. "The chips and tortillas are made in house!" one reviewer wrote. Another called the steak tacos "packed with flavor" and said the corn ribs were "AMAZING." One diner who grew up with "excellent Mexican food" elsewhere called it the best in the area. The one complaint: the booth seats are a little worn.

3. La Tacita: 4.7 stars (135 reviews)
6517 Kitten Lake Drive, Suite W-5, Midland · (706) 221-6022 · 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. (4 p.m. Sunday); closed Tuesday
La Tacita100 is the only Mexican breakfast spot on the list, a bakery and café in Midland that opens at 7 a.m. Google's review summary says diners love the breakfast burritos, the chilaquiles and the tres leches French toast, along with pastries, coffee drinks and a spotless dining room.
The chilaquiles are the order. One reviewer pointed out that they're made with fried tortillas, "not store-bought chips." Another, who admitted she'd hesitated to pay $10 for a breakfast burrito, gave the chilaquiles a "10/10." Try the tres leches latte with it. It's a daytime place: La Tacita closes at 5 p.m. and doesn't open on Tuesdays.

2. Santo Corazón Mexican GastroBar: 4.7 stars (150 reviews)
8186 Veterans Parkway, Building 1 · (706) 221-2065 · Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Santo Corazón is one of the newest spots on the list, and diners have taken to it fast: 150 reviews and a 4.7-star rating. It's a gastrobar on north Veterans Parkway, and Google's review summary says diners highlight the quesabirria, the street tacos, the fresh salsa and a lively room.
"It was just like San Diego and TJ," one reviewer wrote. "Best Mexican restaurant so far in Columbus!" Others mention the Norteño roll, the El Regio burrito and strong margaritas. One tip from a diner who came for a birthday: the restaurant doesn't do the in-house birthday celebration some Mexican places are known for.

1. Taco's N Thangz: 4.8 stars (201 reviews)
5520 Forrest Road, Suite E · Tuesday and Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; closed Sunday and Monday
Columbus's top-rated Mexican spot is a small takeout stand on Forrest Road, and diners treat it like a local secret. Google calls it a popular Mexican takeout stand known for flavorful tacos and its signature salmon bowl, and its review summary says diners like the tacos, nachos and bowls, with fresh ingredients, big portions and fair prices.
The salmon bowl gets the most love. "Nothing could have prepared me for just how good it was," one reviewer wrote, adding that the ingredients were fresh, "not frozen!" A first-time customer took the cashier's advice and ordered nachos, half chicken and half beef. Another called it "definitely a hidden gem in Columbus." It also caters, according to reviewers.
Plan around the hours: Taco's N Thangz is closed Sundays and Mondays and closes by 7 or 8 p.m. the rest of the week. Its Google listing doesn't show a phone number.

Worth a try: Paletería Los Reyes for dessert

Paletería Los Reyes isn't a restaurant, and with 93 Google reviews it falls short of our 100-review cutoff, but its 4.8-star rating would have tied for No. 1. It makes Mexican ice cream100 and paletas (fruit and cream ice pops) in flavors you won't find at a chain, including tres leches and chongo. "Their tres leches is some of the best ice cream I've ever had," one reviewer wrote. It's open until 10 p.m. most nights.
