COLUMBUS, Ga. - Columbus city government will alter or suspend services on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2026, for Veterans Day. The city issued a notice of holiday closing on Oct. 29. Emergency services such as fire, police and ambulance are not affected, and residents with an emergency should call 911.

Garbage still runs

The city's notice states that all garbage services will be provided on the normal collection day. That means residents do not need to shift their carts to another day for the holiday. The notice does list Waste and Recycle as closed on Nov. 11, which most likely refers to the division's offices rather than collection routes, so residents with questions about a specific pickup may want to check with the city.

The two city landfills, Granite Bluff and Pine Grove, are closed Nov. 11. Anyone planning to haul yard debris or other material to a landfill should go on another day.

Offices and services that close

The notice lists these as closed on Nov. 11: the 311 Citizens Service Center, Recorder's Court office, and the Property Tax and Motor Vehicle Registration offices. Residents who need to pay a tax bill or register a vehicle in person will need to come before or after the holiday. The city's notice does not say whether any of these services can be completed online that day.

METRA Bus Service will not operate. Riders who depend on METRA to get to work or appointments should plan another way to travel on Nov. 11. The notice lists no replacement service.

What stays open

Most Parks and Recreation facilities close, but several run on normal hours. They are the Columbus Aquatic Center, Cooper Creek Tennis Center, Lake Oliver Marina and the Civic Center and Ice Rink. The Parks and Recreation administration office is closed, while the Columbus Ice Rink is open.

Bull Creek Golf Course and Oxbow Golf Course will also operate on normal business hours. The notice does not give those hours, so players should call ahead or check the courses' own pages. Residents who want a specific recreation center will find it closed unless it appears in the list above.
