COLUMBUS, Ga. - Every Columbus traveler eventually faces the same question: fly out of Columbus Airport or make the drive to Atlanta. Columbus has one airline and one destination, but parking is a fraction of the price and the lines are short. Here is how the two options compare on parking, flights, shuttles and total cost.

The gap between the two airports is about 100 miles of interstate. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is reached from Columbus by Interstate 185 and Interstate 85, a drive that usually takes about an hour and a half without traffic. The Delta flight from Columbus to Atlanta covers 82 miles and takes just under an hour.

Flying From Columbus

Columbus Airport has one airline, Delta, with nonstop flights to Atlanta. From there, travelers connect to Delta's worldwide network, so a trip from Columbus to almost anywhere is one stop through Atlanta. Most flights use regional jets operated by Delta Connection.

Delta added bigger planes this year. On June 12, 2026, the airline began flying a Boeing 717 on select midday Friday and Saturday flights between Columbus and Atlanta as a summer trial. The 717 seats 110 passengers, more than 40% more than the CRJ-900 regional jet that normally serves the route.

Airport officials have said there is room for more growth. The airport has said that more than 40,000 passengers a month travel from the region, but Columbus Airport captures only about 5,500 of them, with most driving to Atlanta. Airport director Amber Clark credited the bigger plane to people in the community "choosing to fly local."

Parking at Columbus Airport

Parking is where Columbus has its clearest advantage. Columbus Airport charges $9 a day in its long-term lot and $10 a day in short-term parking, according to the airport's posted rates. Short stops are cheap, too, starting at $2 for the first 30 minutes in the short-term lot.

Columbus Airport parkingRate
Short-term, first 30 minutes$2
Short-term, 31-60 minutes$3
Short-term, each additional hour$2
Short-term, daily maximum$10
Long-term, first hour$3
Long-term, each additional hour$2
Long-term, daily maximum$9

The airport is also easy to get through. Travelers can park within a short walk of the terminal, and the airport rebuilt its main runway, Runway 6-24, in 2025. Security lines are typically much shorter than in Atlanta, which lets many travelers arrive closer to departure time.

Parking in Atlanta

Parking at Hartsfield-Jackson costs more. As of October 2026, the airport's economy lots charged $20 a day and the Domestic Park-Ride lot charged $15 a day, with a free shuttle to the terminal. Private lots near the airport advertise lower rates, though they also require a shuttle.

For a weeklong trip, the difference adds up quickly. Seven days in Columbus' long-term lot costs $63, compared with $105 in Atlanta's Park-Ride lot or $140 in its economy lots. That gap grows if you add the cost of gas for a roughly 200-mile round trip to Atlanta.

The Groome Shuttle

Travelers who do not want to drive can take a shuttle. Groome Transportation runs about 30 round trips a day between Columbus and the Atlanta airport. Its online fares start at $59 one way from its Columbus office, with a standard adult fare of $69.

Groome also offers lower fares for some passengers. Children 12 and under ride for $45 one way, and pets travel for $19. Pickups at some downtown hotels cost more, so check the fare for your pickup point when booking.

How to Compare a Trip

The cheapest way to decide is to price the whole trip, not just the flight. Start with the airfare from each airport, then add parking, gas or shuttle fares and the value of your time. A Columbus flight is often more expensive than flying from Atlanta, but the savings on parking and driving can close much of that gap.

Columbus Airport offers an online cost calculator for this. It lets travelers enter fares from both airports, the mileage to each one, the number of days parked and their car's gas mileage. For short trips and travelers who value time, Columbus often comes out ahead, while long international trips and cheap Atlanta fares can favor the drive.
