Columbus, Georgia, has 11 facilities listed in its Parks and Recreation Department's recreation center directory, including neighborhood gyms, community centers, supercenters and a boxing gym. Several facilities advertise three-hour gym rentals for $150, community room rentals for $150 and entire-building rentals for $400, with a separate $200 security deposit.

For residents planning a birthday party, family reunion, basketball gathering or community event, the city's recreation centers offer an alternative to private event venues. But the rules matter: Reservations must be made in person, rental fees and deposits are due when booking, and not every building offers the same programs or hours.

The facilities also provide activities for residents who are not planning private events. Some have basketball courts, playgrounds, game rooms, after-school activities, weight rooms and other recreational programs.

Here is a guide to all 11 listed locations, what their official pages say, and how the rental process works.

1. Where are Columbus's 11 recreation centers?

The Columbus Parks and Recreation Department maintains an online directory identifying recreation facilities across the city. The directory includes neighborhood centers, larger supercenters and facilities dedicated to particular activities.

The following addresses and regular operating hours come from the city's individual facility pages, not estimated schedules.

Facilities without Saturday hours listed in the table are shown as closed on weekends on their individual pages. Sunday is listed as closed for all 11 facilities during regular public operations.

These are normal facility hours, not necessarily private-event rental periods. Columbus publishes separate rental schedules, and holiday closings or programming can affect availability.

2. Which Columbus recreation centers have the most amenities?

The larger supercenters offer some of the broadest selections of indoor and outdoor facilities. Northside and Psalmond Road both describe multipurpose recreation buildings with gyms, activity rooms, weight rooms, kitchens and game rooms.

Northside Recreation Center, at 2010 American Way, is described by the city as a 19,000-square-foot facility. Its park includes three softball fields, a half-mile asphalt walking trail and a playground, while the indoor building has spaces for recreation and organized activities.

Psalmond Road Supercenter, at 6550 Psalmond Road, also has a 19,000-square-foot recreation building. Its facilities include a gymnasium, weight room, aerobics room, children's activity room, full kitchen, game room and locker rooms, with four Little League fields and a playground outside.

Shirley Winston Recreation Center, at 5025 Steam Mill Road, offers another 19,000-square-foot recreation facility. Its surrounding park includes a Little League baseball complex, an asphalt walking trail and a football field.

Frank Chester Recreation Center, at 1441 Benning Drive, is also listed as a 19,000-square-foot building. Located at Benning Park, it has nearby tennis courts, softball fields, a racquetball court, a playground and a Born Learning Trail.

For someone who needs a gym, kitchen or large indoor gathering space, those facilities are logical starting points. A specific room's availability, permitted use and rental capacity still need to be confirmed with the city.

3. How much does it cost to rent a Columbus recreation center?

Columbus publishes rental prices on the individual pages for Frank Chester, Northside, Psalmond Road and Shirley Winston recreation centers. The listed charges are the same for residents and nonresidents at those four facilities.

The prices apply to three-hour rentals, with additional hourly charges where offered. The city's published rental rules require the security deposit and rental fee to be paid when completing the reservation.

Rental spaceThree-hour rentalSecurity depositEach additional hour
Gymnasium, sports only$150$200$50
Community room and kitchen$150$200$50
Entire facility$400$200$100

The posted capacity for a gym or entire facility is 505 people. The community room and kitchen capacity is listed as 35 to 50 people, depending on the space.

These figures are not a citywide price guarantee for all 11 locations. Some smaller facilities do not publish private rental prices on their individual pages, and residents should call the rental office rather than assume the same charges apply.

The city's rental information number is 706-225-4658.

4. What would a birthday party or basketball rental actually cost?

A $150 advertised rental does not mean someone can reserve the space by paying only $150. The published rental policy also requires a security deposit, which is paid when completing the reservation.

Consider a hypothetical three-hour gathering in a community room and kitchen at one of the centers advertising those rates.

ExpenseCalculationAmount
Three-hour community room rentalPublished fee$150
Security depositPublished deposit$200
Amount due when booking$150 + $200$350

If the deposit is refunded in full, the final facility rental cost would be $150. The city's policy ties deposit refunds to the condition of the facility and compliance with rental requirements.

For a three-hour sports-only gym rental, the published figures produce the same $350 upfront total. Renting an entire facility for three hours would require $400 in rent plus a $200 deposit, or $600 at booking.

The city also lists a $35 administrative charge when renters charge for an aspect of a special event, along with a separate $35 fee per vendor per event date. These charges may affect the total for events involving sales or vendors.

5. How do you reserve a recreation center?

Columbus does not accept recreation center reservations over the telephone. Residents can call to ask about availability, but they must complete reservations in person at the Parks and Recreation administrative office.

The office is located at Columbus City Hall, 1111 First Ave. Its published rental-office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Here is the city's stated process:

  1. Choose a recreation center and the type of space needed.
  2. Call 706-225-4658 to ask about availability and applicable rates.
  3. Visit the rental office in person to complete the required paperwork.
  4. Pay the rental fee and security deposit to confirm the reservation.
  5. Review the facility rules, event timing and cancellation requirements.

The city says reservations generally must be made at least three weeks and no more than six months before the event, unless an authorized department official approves an exception.

Bookings are first come, first served, and the department does not place temporary holds on facilities. An event is not confirmed until the rental agreement is completed and full payment is received.

6. Can you rent a recreation center on weekends?

Yes, but the rental hours are different from regular public operating hours. Columbus's rental policy specifically describes Saturday and Sunday reservation periods for supercenter facilities.

For Saturday events, the community room and kitchen are listed as available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The entire facility is listed for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Sunday rental availability is listed as 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for the community room and kitchen or the entire facility. The policy limits facility rental to a maximum of eight hours within a 24-hour period.

The city's rental page also states that rentals are not available during the week. Since the published schedule describes supercenter reservations specifically, renters should confirm which buildings and rooms are available for their desired dates.

City-sponsored activities receive priority over private reservations. Holidays, repairs, construction and operational emergencies can also affect whether a confirmed facility remains available.

7. What rules should you know before booking?

The city counts setup, cleanup and the actual event within the time purchased. Renters cannot enter before the time stated on the rental agreement, so the three-hour rental period must accommodate more than just the main activity.

The department also restricts what can happen inside rented facilities. Its policy prohibits alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, unauthorized weapons, gambling and indoor inflatables, while food and drinks are restricted to designated community room and kitchen areas.

Renters must be at least 18 years old and must provide proper supervision for minors. The policy limits events to 40 participants under age 18 and requires one adult chaperone for every 10 minors.

A limited number of tables and chairs may be available, but renters are responsible for setting them up and putting them away. Failure to follow cleanup and other requirements can result in losing the security deposit.

The city says a qualifying deposit refund is generally processed in approximately six weeks, described as 30 business days. Its cancellation policy also establishes advance-notice requirements, so residents should read the agreement carefully before paying.

8. Where can children find basketball and after-school activities?

Several neighborhood recreation centers publish programs or amenities intended for children and teenagers. The offerings vary, and the official pages do not establish one uniform calendar or price schedule covering every activity.

29th Street Recreation Center, at 501 29th St., describes after-school activities, educational programming and physical fitness opportunities for elementary through high school students, as well as adults. Its posted rules say school students are not permitted in the building until after 3 p.m.

Boxwood Recreation Center, at 1068 Enoch Drive, lists a game room, multipurpose activity room, large playing field, basketball courts and playground. It also describes technological resources, tutorial services and cultural programming.

Carver Park Recreation Center, at 6665 Hunter Road, offers programs for participants ranging from age 6 through adulthood. Its facility page lists a weekday half-court basketball period from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., along with separate rules for center and gym use.

Michael Fluellen Recreation Center, at 2824 8th St., features basketball courts, a playground, game room, multipurpose activity room, kitchen and memorial garden. Its published rules require children under 10 to have adult supervision and school students to wait until after 3 p.m. before entering.

Families should contact individual centers to verify current activity schedules, age eligibility and any program charges.

9. Where can adults find pickleball, classes or other activities?

Northside Recreation Center publishes one of the more detailed program schedules among the facilities reviewed. Its posted offerings include pickleball, weighted hula hoop, arts and crafts, board games and Cricut classes.

The center lists pickleball open-court sessions Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It separately lists pickleball classes on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for six-week sessions.

Weighted hula hoop sessions are listed for Mondays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Other activities include weekday board games and Wednesday Cricut classes.

Those are the times displayed on Northside's official facility page, not a guarantee that each session will be operating on a particular visit. The page does not establish fees for every program, so interested participants should call the center at 706-641-5940.

The facility also cautions that open-court availability can vary. Residents who want to play a particular sport should check the posted court schedule or contact staff before traveling.

10. Does Columbus have a recreation center specifically for boxing?

Yes. Haygood Gym, at Building B, 602 11th Ave., is home to the Columbus Boxing Gym, which lists participation opportunities for boys and girls age 8 and older.

The facility's published schedule is Monday through Friday, 5 to 10 p.m. It is closed Saturdays and Sundays.

The official page lists these charges:

Boxing program chargePublished amount
Adult monthly membership$20
Adult annual insurance$35
Youth monthly membership, ages 8–17$20
Youth annual insurance$25
Competition fee, all ages$95 annually

The facility also lists competition training and weight training. Physical examinations are required for competition participants, according to the city.

Haygood's page identifies specific training rules and equipment requirements. Residents interested in joining should contact the gym at 706-225-4130 to confirm enrollment arrangements and the currently applicable fees.

11. Are there facilities for specialized programs or public swimming?

Pop Austin Recreation Center, at 1301 Alexander St., has been designated as a facility for Columbus Parks and Recreation's Therapeutics program. The city describes it as a place where program participants gather for activities.

Its public operating schedule is Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with Friday through Sunday listed as closed. Residents interested in the program should contact the center at 706-225-3767 to determine participation requirements.

For swimming, Columbus also operates the Columbus Aquatics Center, at 1603 Midtown Drive. It is not one of the 11 recreation facilities in the department's recreation center directory, but it provides another public recreational option with published admission prices.

The Aquatics Center lists weekday hours from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The facility is closed Sunday.

Age groupMuscogee County residentNonresident
11 and younger$2$4
12–17$3$6
18–54$5$10
55 and older$3$6

The Aquatics Center also lists multimonth memberships and separate family membership options. Admission is based on identification, and the city publishes restrictions concerning swimwear, children and refunds.

How to choose the right Columbus recreation center

Start with the activity rather than assuming every recreation center provides the same services. Someone planning a private basketball event should investigate the supercenters with published gym rentals, while a family looking for after-school activities may find a nearby neighborhood center more practical.

For larger gatherings, review the room capacity, rental period and permitted uses before booking. The advertised rental fee is only one part of the upfront cost, and setup, cleanup, deposits and special-event charges can affect the overall budget.

Residents who simply want to participate in a program should contact the individual facility for its current schedule. Posted operating hours do not mean every gym, classroom or activity area is available for unrestricted public use throughout the day.

The starting point for all 11 locations is the Columbus Parks and Recreation directory. For facility rentals, the central number is 706-225-4658, and reservations must be completed in person at City Hall.

How we did this

Columbus Times reviewed the official Columbus Parks and Recreation facility directory and opened each of its 11 individual facility pages to verify addresses, operating hours and listed amenities. We also reviewed the department's current rental policies and published rental prices for Frank Chester, Northside, Psalmond Road and Shirley Winston recreation centers.

Admission fees for the Columbus Aquatics Center and membership charges for Haygood Gym were taken from their individual official pages. Where the department did not publish a price, activity fee or rental schedule for a particular facility, none was assumed.

Rental availability and programming may change. Residents should confirm details directly with Parks and Recreation before making payments or traveling to a facility.
