A Bright Star On and Off Screen

Spencer rose to fame as Dee Thomas, the sharp-witted younger sister in the Thomas family on ABC’s What’s Happening!! The sitcom aired from 1976 to 1979, becoming a cultural touchstone for its humor and portrayal of African-American family life. She later reprised her role in the 1980s revival, What’s Happening Now!!

Nelson, who played Dwayne on the series, shared heartfelt words about his friend:

“Dr. Dee, our brilliant, loving, positive, pragmatic warrior, without fail, has finally found her release from the clutches of this world and a body,” Nelson wrote. “We celebrate Danielle Spencer and her contributions as we regret to inform her departure and transition from a long battle with cancer.”

He added that he spoke with Spencer just a week ago, praising her unwavering positivity and optimism despite her health struggles.

A Life of Resilience and Service

Born in New Jersey, Spencer endured hardship early in life. In 1976, she was seriously injured in a car crash that claimed the life of her stepfather, actor Tim Pelt. Despite these challenges, she pursued education and personal passions after her acting career.

Spencer attended the University of California, Davis, later earning her veterinary degree from Tuskegee University in 1996. She devoted her life to caring for animals—a passion that defined her second career.

Health Challenges

Spencer was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014 and, in 2018, underwent emergency brain surgery following a serious bleed. Through it all, those close to her describe her as determined, gracious, and full of life.

Spencer’s legacy as both a beloved actress and a dedicated veterinarian leaves an indelible mark. She will be remembered for her talent, her compassion, and her resilience.
