Join the Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia, Inc. (SCFG) on Monday, January 15, 2024 for an unforgettable day of giving back and making a difference in our community at the 6th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service in East Point.
The Day of Service will occur from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. at the Jefferson Park Recreation Center at 1431 Norman Berry Drive.
Event organizers will offer complimentary food, unique swag bags, and access to a mini health fair, where SCFG will offer testing for sickle cell disease and traits on its mobile Health Hub.
The event honors the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy of service to humanity.
East Point City Councilmember Sharon Shropshire, Ward A At-Large, organizes the event.
Sickle cell disease is a painful genetic blood disorder and occurs in about 1 out of every 365 Black births and about 1 in 13 Black babies are born with sickle cell trait (SCT). If both parents carry the trait, there is a 25 percent chance of their child being born with the disease. Complications from the disease, such as organ failure, can be deadly.
